Janis McKernan-Markoff, MSN, BS, RN is the Director of Nursing Services at the Charlesgate Nursing Center, a leading long-term facility specializing in assisted living, nursing services, independent living and health care services. She primarily cares for geriatric, psychiatric, dementia and rehab patients, develops dementia units, and consults in management and dementia training, and in her current capacity, Ms. McKernan-Markoff is in charge of executing all nursing policies and procedures. Her responsibilities in her current role also entail the implementation of care systems, management of nursing staff, and oversight of personnel. Ms. McKernan-Markoff is the author of “Development of Alzheimer’s Disease Special Care Units on a Statewide Level,” published through the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Care and Related Disorders and Research in 1994, and “Alternative Care in Long-Term Care Facilities,” published through the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists in 1989. Over the course of a successful 40-year spanning career, Ms. McKernan-Markoff has celebrated many professional triumphs, and she pinpoints the highlights of her career as being the first nurse to work for the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, creating her own nonprofit organization to develop special care units, educating and training staff and families in the care and treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, and serving in the military for more than 17 years.
