Anchorage, Alaska, December 23, 2010, Kathy Sterner, Family Nurse Practitioner for the Camai Community Health Center, has been recognized by Elite American Nurses for dedication, achievements and leadership in family health care. Ms. Sterner finds the most rewarding aspect of her career to be witnessing her patients achieve a better quality of life. Over the last 31 years, she has developed an expertise in family health care which she employs on a daily basis in her responsibilities of managing pediatrics and geriatrics, and educating patients on diabetes and hypertension. Drawing inspiration from her tenure with the Nursing Corps of the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve, Ms. Sterner has showcased her ability to separate herself from her colleagues through her relentless dedication and tenacity. A registered nurse, Ms. Sterner holds a Master of Science in nursing from the University of Kentucky at Lexington and a Bachelor of Science in the same discipline from the University of Michigan. She has completed postgraduate coursework in acute care nursing, as well as a nurse practitioner training program. To keep abreast of industry trends, she is affiliated with the Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Living her life by the Ten Commandments, Ms. Sterner has been profoundly influenced by her preceptors. By shadowing their behavior and gathering knowledge, she has shaped her own values and work ethic to embrace challenges and new opportunities. When she starts a job, she is determined to see it through. With a long-term aspiration to work overseas, Ms. Sterner is an advocate of health care reform and believes it to be the answer to the national debt crisis. When advising those just entering the health care profession her wisdom is simple: “Learn as much as you can in a hospital before establishing a private practice.” When she is away from her professional duties, Ms. Sterner enjoys sewing, traveling and reading. She keeps active by swimming and bicycling. A benevolent individual, Ms. Sterner lends her support to voluntary initiatives with the local church and soup kitchen.
