Topeka, Indiana | January 3, 2011 | Martha Barkman Schmucker, RN, BSN, critical care registered nurse at Goshen General Hospital, has been recognized by Elite American Nurses for demonstrating dedication, leadership, and excellence in nursing. Ms. Schmucker is an expert in critical-care and medical-surgical nursing with nearly three decades of experience. As a critical care registered nurse for Goshen General Hospital, Ms. Schmucker is responsible for assisting in the intensive care unit, caring for acute-care patients, and developing health care plans for patients. The reward of her career is watching a patient smile because of her care and she enjoys interacting with her colleagues and patients. Attributing her success in nursing to her interest in science and the human body, Ms. Schmucker advises others in the industry to follow your dreams and work hard in order to achieve success.
Ms. Schmucker is an “outside the box” thinker and is able to anticipate changes before they happen. She is proud to have helped develop the original nursing model for Goshen General Hospital and she developed paper care plans for the hospital and teaching brochures for patients. In addition, she helped the hospital convert from paper charting to computerized charting. She feels blessed to have been able to help make nursing changes at the hospital and was overjoyed when the hospital earned Magnet status and the intensive care unit received the Beacon Award for Excellence. She chose a career in nursing because she was inspired by the stories she heard in her childhood from an elderly neighbor who had been a nurse and she gets a great sense of joy in knowing that patients feel they are getting the best care possible at Goshen General. She graduated from Goshen College in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
