SCHENECTADY, NY, September 12, 2013, Samara M. Gabree, ANP-C, AAHIVS, Nurse Practitioner and HIV Specialist, has been recognized by Elite American Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in HIV specialty care.

For more than 16 years, Ms. Gabree has been nurturing an ever-emergent skill set, which currently encompasses proficiencies in adult primary care, HIV specialty care, and substance abuse treatment. At her current post, Ms. Gabree serves as the primary care provider at a medical center, where she also manages all acute and chronic conditions for a caseload of more than 220 patients, and teaches mini-residents about HIV specialty care. She became involved in her profession after gaining experience as a nurses’ aide in the HIV unit during her registered nurse training, which gave her drive to become a nurse practitioner specializing in HIV care.

Ms. Gabree served as an adjunct professor and clinical instructor for the registered nurse program at Maria College and the licensed practical nurse program at Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational Services. She is extremely active with the local HIV community, where she works with fellow HIV/AIDS nurses in an effort to improve HIV-related education opportunities for local health care workers. She has held positions of leadership in the Capital District Chapter of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care that provides four annual dinner lectures on HIV-related topics. She speaks for the Gilead HIV Sciences Community Speakers Bureau to provide HIV education to patient groups, case managers and community-based organizations. She also speaks for ViiV Healthcare to both allied professionals and HIV community groups on various topics in HIV. Ms. Gabree was also recently appointed to the New York Certification Association Peer Advocate Advisory Board (PAAB).  The PAAB will assist in developing the Certified Recovery Peer Advocate certification by providing guidance and recommendations on professional standards, ethical conduct, certification policy and procedures.

Upon reflecting on a rewarding career, Ms. Gabree attributes her success to her passion for her profession and her patients. She feels that her ability to form deep, trusting partnerships with her patients is a key to her success. In looking forward to a bright future, Ms. Gabree hopes to expand her HIV practice, get more involved with substance abuse treatment, and possibly obtain a postgraduate certificate as a psychiatric nurse practitioner so she feels more comfortable treating the mental health of her patients.
